Cambridge Martial Arts Gradings and Belts
It is entirely up to Sensei’s discretion whether a student is ready to grade for the next belt level. There are a minimum amount of training hours a student has to have at a belt level and as a student advances through the belt levels the minimum amount of training hours spent at each level is greater. There are certain requirements that must be accomplished at each belt level in order to advance. These requirements are not judged on the student’s personal ability to do them but on whether they know how. As the student advances through the belts the requirements and ability to do them becomes much stricter.
If Sensei feels a student is ready to grade to the best of their ability it does not mean they have to grade. If a student does not feel they have accomplished their personal best they can choose to wait for a future grading.
